Shannon Bickford - Reflections

These images represent a journey.  That journey began when I accompanied my husband to numerous car shows.  While at first, the cars were fun to view, I never thought of them as images for painting.  As  images sometimes do, they grew on me, especially watching reflections in the shiny surfaces--the funny, intricate, distorted likeness of life going on around me. I began painting these images.  This  was nothing new, it had been done before; but still they demanded to be painted.  Then, as images sometimes do, they evolved into mandalas. As such, they spoke to me of cycles, repetition, tedium, the ordinary becoming extraordinary, and finally, the material merging with the spiritual.  There are times when I am humbled, feeling less like an artist directing my brush and more like one honored with the duty to attend and interpret.
